Introdução: Dada maior susceptibilidade a infecções bacterianas em pacientes imunossuprimidos, a utilização de sulfametoxazol e trimetoprima justifica sua relevância com impacto positivo na redução de condições graves causada por bactérias, sendo a pneumonia uma causa significativa de morbimortalidade nesses indivíduos.
Objetivo: Investigar, interpretar e revisar os achados sobre pneumonia em imunossuprimidos, e o uso de Sulfametoxazol e Trimetoprima na profilaxia dessa doença, avaliando a eficácia, segurança e acompanhamento desses pacientes com maior vulnerabilidade imunológica.
Metodologia: Utilizou-se a base Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (MEDLINE/PubMed), sob os descritores sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim; immunosuppressed; pneumonia, com seleção de artigos de revisão e artigos originais, seguindo critérios de elegibilidade. Foram encontrados 695 textos, com seleção inicial 507, dos quais restaram 39 artigos elegíveis.
Resultados: Os artigos, redigidos em língua inglesa, contemplavam também publicações de autores e periódicos de diferentes nacionalidades.
Considerações finais: O uso de SMX/TMP é uma alternativa promissora para a terapêutica profilática de pneumonia em pacientes imunodeprimidos, visto o número crescendo de pessoas submetidas a terapias imunossupressoras para diversas condições médicas. Entretanto, a falta de estudos sobre a segurança a longo prazo, seu estímulo no desenvolvimento de bactérias variantes resistentes e os efeitos adversos causados pelo medicamento, demonstra a necessidade de novas pesquisas sobre esses fármacos nesta condição, a fim de minimizar o máximo possível dos malefícios e ter resposta terapêutica mais eficiente.
