Abstract

Guided bone regeneration (GBR) is a surgical technique designed to repair and reconstruct bone tissue, promoting rehabilitation with implants. This study conducted a literature review on GBR for vertical bone gain in edentulous patients, analyzing materials, advantages, and clinical limitations. 27 articles published in the last five years were consulted in the PubMed and BVS databases, with 17 included after selection criteria. The results showed that autogenous grafts remain the gold standard, but alternatives such as xenogeneic, allogeneic, and heterogeneic grafts can be used due to donor limitations. The combination of autogenous grafts with xenogeneic biomaterials and the use of barrier membranes, such as polytetrafluoroethylene and titanium meshes, showed greater clinical predictability. Complications such as early exposure of membranes and infections still pose significant risks. It is concluded that GOR is effective for bone reconstruction, allowing predictable vertical and horizontal gain, but the choice of biomaterial and membrane must consider the patient's clinical conditions. Longitudinal and comparative studies are needed to standardize protocols and evaluate the long-term stability of implants.
