CLINICAL AND CHRONIC MANIFESTATIONS OF CHIKUNGUNYA: A LITERATURE REVIEW ON ITS IMPACT ON QUALITY OF LIFE AND FUNCTIONALITY

INTRODUCTION: Chikungunya is an arbovirus caused by the CHIKV virus, transmitted primarily by mosquitoes of the Aedes genus. Although the acute phase of the disease is self-limiting, a significant number of patients develop subacute and chronic forms, characterized by persistent rheumatic manifestations such as arthralgia, joint stiffness, and fatigue. These changes negatively impact the functionality and quality of life of affected individuals. OBJECTIVE: To review of the scientific literature to identify, describe, and analyze the chronic clinical manifestations of Chikungunya infection and their impact on the functionality and quality of life of patients. METHODOLOGY: This is a literature review based on publications published between 2010 and 2024, located in PubMed, SciELO, BVS, and Google Scholar. Original studies, dissertations, and theses that addressed the chronic phase of the disease and its impact on functionality or quality of life were included. The analysis involved a full reading of the selected texts, extraction of key data, and critical synthesis of the findings. CONCLUSION: The persistence of Chikungunya joint symptoms constitutes a public health problem that compromises patients' functional performance and psychosocial aspects. Therapeutic approaches should be multidimensional, involving pharmacological strategies, functional rehabilitation, and psychosocial support. The introduction of preventive vaccines appears to be a promising tool, but their effective implementation still requires overcoming logistical and social challenges.
