Between Books and Suffering:
A Public Health Perspective on Depression among Medical Students

First of all, they understand that the depression among medical students is an emerging and concerning problem, associated with individual, academic, and institutional factors, significantly impacting quality of life and academic performance. This study aimed to analyze scientific literature on depression among medical students from the perspective of Collective Health, identifying associated factors, impacts, and prevention strategies. It is a qualitative, exploratory, and descriptive literature review conducted in Google Scholar, SciELO, PubMed, and LILACS databases, using the descriptors “collective health,” “depression,” “mental health,” and “medical students.” Eighteen articles published in the last ten years were selected after rigorous inclusion and exclusion criteria. Analysis revealed a high prevalence of depressive symptoms in this group, attributed to academic overload, competitiveness, institutional culture, and lack of structured psychological support. Gaps in preventive approaches were identified, highlighting the importance of public policies, curricular flexibility, self-care promotion, and integration of mental health themes into medical curricula. It is concluded that understanding depression among medical students requires an interdisciplinary perspective and integrated action, considering individual and social determinants, with a focus on promoting healthier and sustainable medical education.
