Abstract

Although advances in the clinical treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) have reduced the need for surgical interventions, many patients still develop disabling deformities in their hands, significantly affecting their quality of life and daily activities. The article explores the lack of consensus on the appropriate timing for surgical intervention, highlighting the existing differences between rheumatologists and hand surgeons. Rheumatologists generally tend to delay referral for surgical evaluation, prioritizing prolonged clinical management and the use of advanced pharmacological therapies. On the other hand, surgeons argue that performing surgery at earlier stages can preserve joint functionality, prevent more severe deformities, and improve patients' quality of life in the long term. Insufficient communication between these specialties hinders decision-making, may delay potentially beneficial interventions, and complicates patient care. The article emphasizes the need for further studies, better collaboration, and an interdisciplinary approach to improve clinical outcomes and provide more effective and comprehensive care for patients with RA.
