Abstract
Objective: To analyze the effects of bisphosphonate use on the osseointegration process of dental implants in patients with osteoporosis, considering the associated risks and clinical implications. Methods: This is an integrative literature review, conducted through systematic searches in scientific databases between 2018 and 2025, using descriptors related to osteoporosis, dental implants, and bisphosphonates. Eight studies that met the eligibility criteria were selected, addressing relevant aspects of the interaction between these medications and implant dentistry. Results: The findings demonstrated that osteoporosis, by itself, does not constitute an absolute contraindication to dental implant placement, provided that appropriate clinical follow-up is ensured. However, the use of bisphosphonates, especially via the intravenous route and over prolonged periods, is associated with an increased risk of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaws and may negatively affect bone remodeling, compromising successful osseointegration. Conclusion: The placement of implants in patients with osteoporosis requires individualized evaluation and careful planning. The heterogeneity of the studies and the absence of standardized protocols represent important limitations of this review.
