Abstract

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a global public health issue that requires effective approaches to improve clinical outcomes and patient quality of life. This study aimed to explore the challenges and opportunities associated with implementing multidisciplinary approaches in CKD management. An integrative literature review was conducted using databases such as PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science, with search terms related to CKD and multidisciplinary care. Studies addressing multidisciplinary interventions in adult CKD patients published up to April 2023 were included. The results showed that the multidisciplinary approach significantly improves clinical outcomes, delaying disease progression and reducing associated mortality. Early interventions by multidisciplinary teams proved effective in controlling risk factors such as hypertension and diabetes. Additionally, programs that include health education, psychological support, and nutritional guidance improved patient adherence to treatment and quality of life. The inclusion of pharmacists in care teams also stood out as an effective strategy to optimize medication management. However, the implementation of multidisciplinary models faces challenges such as organizational barriers, lack of resources, and the need for coordination among healthcare professionals. Variability in care models and lack of standardization of interventions may limit their effectiveness. The discussion highlights the need for investments in infrastructure, professional training, and the development of health policies that promote multidisciplinary practice. In conclusion, the multidisciplinary approach in CKD management is an effective strategy to improve clinical outcomes, patient quality of life, and the efficiency of health systems. The implementation and expansion of multidisciplinary models are recommended, adapting them to local needs. Future studies should focus on standardizing interventions and evaluating the long-term clinical and economic impacts.
