Abstract

This article aims to describe the functioning, maturation and influences on the neonatal immune system. This is an integrative review using the BVS, SciELO, LILACS and PubMed as databases over the last 5 years. 252 articles on the topic were evaluated with an emphasis on a synthesis of the most recent knowledge and greater scientific consistency. The importance and benefits of breastfeeding in the first hour of a newborn's life are concluded, with the family support network and humanized, quality care being essential.
