REPRODUCTIVE PLANNING FOR WOMEN USING GLP-1 AGONISTS: AN INTEGRATIVE REVIEW

The use of glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists has increased among women of reproductive age, primarily for the treatment of obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and metabolic disorders associated with insulin resistance. Given this context, the potential impact of these therapies on fertility, contraception, and pregnancy planning is a matter of importance. This study aimed to analyze the available scientific evidence regarding reproductive planning for women using GLP-1 agonists. It is an integrative literature review based on studies published between 2018 and 2026, selected from national and international scientific databases. The results demonstrated that these medications offer significant benefits regarding glycemic control, body weight reduction, and the improvement of insulin resistance. In women with polycystic ovary syndrome, these effects may contribute to greater menstrual regularity and the restoration of ovulation, thereby increasing the likelihood of pregnancy. However, evidence regarding safety during pregnancy remains limited, underscoring the need for effective contraception and the discontinuation of treatment prior to planned conception. The study concludes that reproductive planning should be an integral part of the care provided to women of childbearing age using GLP-1 agonists, involving individualized guidance on fertility, contraception, and the preconception period.
