DENTAL MANAGEMENT OF CHILDREN WITH AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER

A literature review

Abstract

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by impairments in communication and social interaction, restricted and repetitive patterns of behavior, as well as sensory alterations that may significantly compromise an individual’s adaptation to different environments, including the dental office. In pediatric patients, these characteristics may make clinical care challenging, requiring the adoption of specific behavioral and environmental management strategies. The present study aimed to investigate, through a literature review, the main dental management strategies used in the care of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder, highlighting the importance of non-pharmacological approaches in promoting oral health and adapting patients to dental treatment. The literature demonstrates that techniques such as the Tell-Show-Do method, systematic desensitization, positive reinforcement, alternative communication, the use of visual resources, establishment of routines, and adaptation of the clinical environment have shown positive results. It is concluded that dental care for pediatric patients with ASD should be individualized, humanized, and evidence-based, allowing for safer, more effective, and inclusive care, thereby contributing to improvements in the quality of life and oral health of this population.
