AESTHETIC AND FUNCTIONAL REHABILITATION OF SEQUELAE OF BELL'S FACIAL PARALYSIS WITH BOTULINUM TOXIN TYPE A: A CASE REPORT

Abstract

Bell’s peripheral facial palsy is characterized by sudden facial nerve impairment, resulting in functional alterations, facial asymmetry, and significant psychosocial impact. Among minimally invasive therapeutic approaches, botulinum toxin type A stands out for its ability to reduce muscular hyperactivity, control synkinesis, and restore dynamic facial balance. This study aimed to report the therapeutic use of botulinum toxin type A in the aesthetic and functional rehabilitation of a patient with chronic sequelae of Bell’s palsy. A 63-year-old female patient presenting left peripheral facial paralysis, synkinesis, and persistent facial asymmetry underwent individualized application of botulinum toxin type A after detailed clinical evaluation. After 28 days, significant improvement in facial symmetry, reduction of muscle spasms, and improvement in self-esteem were observed, with satisfactory progression during follow-up evaluations. The findings reinforce the effectiveness of botulinum toxin type A as a safe and effective therapeutic alternative in the management of peripheral facial paralysis sequelae, especially when performed through individualized planning and adequate anatomical-functional knowledge.
