Abstract

The use of hyaluronic acid (HA) in facial harmonization has established itself as an effective and minimally invasive alternative for the aesthetic improvement of the lower third of the face, especially in patients with skeletal discrepancies classified as Class II treated through compensatory orthodontics. In these cases, although orthodontic treatment promotes functional adequacy and satisfactory dental alignment, limitations related to the facial profile and mental projection may persist, motivating the search for complementary resources. The present study, based on an integrative review of the literature, aimed to evaluate the contribution of hyaluronic acid in optimizing the aesthetic results of these patients, considering anatomical aspects, clinical predictability, safety and limitations of the technique. The findings show that the association between compensatory orthodontics and facial harmonization can provide a significant improvement in balance and facial proportion, especially through projection of the chin and definition of the mandibular contour. The literature demonstrates that hyaluronic acid has a high biocompatibility and safety profile, with the most frequent complications generally being mild, transient and easy to manage. However, the occurrence of more severe adverse events, although rare, reinforces the importance of individualized planning, correct execution of the technique and in-depth knowledge of facial anatomy. It is concluded that the use of hyaluronic acid as a complement to compensatory orthodontics represents a relevant therapeutic strategy for Class II patients, contributing to more harmonious aesthetic results and greater satisfaction with the treatment, as long as it is used judiciously, ethically and based on scientific evidence. New studies are recommended to expand knowledge about its long-term predictability and stability.
