Abstract

This study consists of a literature review on self-healing composites, analyzing them as an innovative alternative to overcome the limitations of conventional resins in restorative dentistry. The research addresses how these smart materials aim to mitigate structural failures, such as microcracks resulting from masticatory fatigue and oral degradation, through extrinsic (use of microcapsules and vasculares networks) and intrinsic mechanisms. Furthermore, the integration of advanced technologies such as nanocomposites (graphene and MXenes), 3D printing, and activation by external stimuli is discussed. It is concluded that, although they show high potential to enhance the clinical longevity of restorations and reduce frequent replacements, full clinical viability still depends on overcoming challenges related to biocompatibility, aesthetic stability, and long-term performance in the oral environment.
