Abstract

Developmental dental anomalies may interfere with tooth eruption, permanent tooth positioning, and orthodontic treatment planning, making early diagnosis essential for appropriate clinical management. The aim of the present study was to report four clinical cases and demonstrate the importance of integrating different imaging modalities for diagnosis and orthodontic treatment planning. Four clinical cases were described, including two cases of supernumerary teeth, one case of dens invaginatus (dens in dente), and one case of concrescence. The cases were evaluated using panoramic radiographs, periapical radiographs, lateral cephalometric radiographs, and cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT), according to the diagnostic requirements of each case. The use of different imaging modalities allowed the identification and characterization of the anomalies, demonstrating that, in certain situations, two-dimensional radiographic examinations do not provide sufficient information for an accurate diagnosis. Periapical radiographs and CBCT were essential complementary imaging examinations for diagnostic confirmation, localization of the affected teeth, anatomical assessment, and orthodontic treatment planning. It is concluded that the judicious integration of different imaging modalities contributes to a more accurate diagnosis and to safer and more predictable orthodontic treatment planning.
