Abstract
Periodontitis is a multifactorial chronic inflammatory disease that progressively affects the integrity of the supporting tissues of the teeth. Some periodontal pathogens colonize in the oral cavity and can translocate from non-periodontais sites to periodontal crevices. It is classified into different stages according to severity, the most severe being periodontitis in grades III and IV as it presents a high level of bone resorption and tooth mobility. Therefore, antibiotic treatment should be considered for periodontal patients to determine the use of systemic antibiotics as adjuncts to mechanical therapy in the treatment of III and IV periodontitis. Systemic antibiotic therapy is administered to reinforce mechanical periodontal treatment and support the host defense system in overcoming infection by killing subgingival pathogens that remain after conventional mechanical periodontal therapy. The use of systemic antibiotics in grade III and IV periodontitis disease presents good efficacy in eliminating resistant bacteria, making it effective in controlling infections and progression of periodontal disease. The objective of this study was to evaluate whether systemic antibiotics are effective as adjuvants to mechanical therapy in the treatment of grade III and IV periodontitis.
