Abstract

Burns constitute a significant public health problem due to high morbidity, mortality, and associated physical, psychological, and socioeconomic impacts. In Brazil, these injuries frequently lead to emergency room visits and hospitalizations, generating a substantial demand on health services. This study aimed to analyze the epidemiological profile of hospitalizations due to burns and corrosions in the state of Paraná between 2020 and 2025. This is a descriptive, retrospective epidemiological study with a quantitative approach, conducted using data obtained from the Hospital Information System of the Unified Health System (SIH/SUS), provided by DATASUS. Hospitalizations registered under codes T20 to T32 of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10) were analyzed, considering the variables health region, sex, age group, race/color, and hospital deaths. During the study period, 17,220 hospitalizations and 447 deaths due to burns and corrosions were recorded in Paraná. Cases and deaths were concentrated mainly in the 2nd Metropolitan Health Region and the 17th Health Region of Londrina. Hospitalizations were predominantly among males (63.8%) and more frequent among children aged 1 to 4 years and young adults aged 20 to 39 years. Regarding race/ethnicity, self-declared white individuals presented the highest number of hospitalizations, mirroring the state's demographic profile. The results show that burns remain a significant public health problem in Paraná, primarily affecting vulnerable populations in terms of age, occupation, and social status. It is concluded that strengthening prevention strategies, health education, and improving the quality of care for burn patients is fundamental to reducing morbidity and mortality and the impacts resulting from these injuries.
