The impacts of aquatic physiotherapy on motor development in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) through an integrative literature review

This study aimed to analyze the impacts of aquatic physiotherapy on motor development in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) through an integrative literature review. ASD is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by persistent deficits in communication, social interaction, and repetitive behaviors, often associated with motor and sensory impairments. In this context, aquatic physiotherapy emerges as a promising therapeutic approach, capable of promoting not only physical improvements but also psychosocial and emotional benefits.
The methodology consisted of a bibliographic survey in recognized scientific databases such as SciELO, LILACS, PubMed, PEDro, Embase, and the Virtual Health Library, using descriptors related to aquatic physiotherapy, hydrotherapy, and ASD. After applying inclusion and exclusion criteria, 13 articles published between 2016 and 2026 were selected for analysis.
The results showed that aquatic physiotherapy promotes significant improvements in gross and fine motor skills, coordination, balance, and posture, while also enhancing body awareness. Specific methods such as Halliwick and Bad Ragaz proved effective in promoting aquatic independence, muscle strengthening, and postural stability. Beyond motor gains, studies highlighted psychosocial and sensory benefits, including reduced anxiety, improved emotional self-regulation, decreased repetitive behaviors, and stimulation of socialization and communication.
It is concluded that aquatic physiotherapy is a multidimensional intervention that contributes to the global development of children with ASD. Despite promising results, methodological gaps remain, such as small sample sizes and limited randomized clinical trials, indicating the need for further research to consolidate evidence and expand clinical applicability.
