The role of physiotherapy in the rehabilitation of patients with lower limb amputees due to type 2 diabetes mellitus: a literature review

Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus is a common metabolic disease in Brazil, associated with inadequate lifestyle habits, which can cause serious complications such as lower limb amputations, representing a significant public health problem. This study aims to analyze the role of physiotherapy in the rehabilitation of patients with lower limb amputations due to Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. A literature review was conducted in the
SciELO, PubMed, BVS, and PEDro databases, considering publications from 2020 to 2025, in order to identify and analyze relevant and up-to-date studies on the subject. The studies observed demonstrate that the rehabilitation of patients with amputations due to Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus requires an early, continuous, and individualized physiotherapy approach, capable of improving functionality, mobility, and quality of life, although functional limitations, influences of socioeconomic factors, and weaknesses in scientific evidence persist, hindering the consolidation of more effective protocols. Thus, it is evident that physiotherapy is essential to improve the functionality and quality of life of patients who have undergone amputations due to type 2 Diabetes Mellitus.
