Abstract

Emotional dependency is characterized by an excessive need for affection, approval, and validation from another person, which can compromise an individual's autonomy and decision-making. In the context of affective relationships, this phenomenon becomes a relevant factor in understanding why women remain in abusive relationships. This study aimed to analyze emotional dependency as a factor associated with violence against women. This is an integrative literature review, conducted through searches in the databases Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences, PubMed, and Google Scholar, using descriptors related to the topic in Portuguese and English. Articles published between 2019 and 2026, available in full text, that addressed the relationship between emotional dependency and violence against women were included. The results showed that emotional dependency is directly related to women remaining in abusive relationships, being influenced by factors such as low self-esteem, fear of loneliness, financial dependence, and lack of a support network. Furthermore, it was observed that psychological violence plays a significant role in strengthening this dysfunctional bond, making it difficult to break the cycle of violence. It is concluded that emotional dependence is a relevant factor in understanding violence against women, requiring integrated approaches that consider psychological, social, and cultural aspects. The importance of the role of health professionals in welcoming and identifying these situations early, as well as in developing strategies that promote female autonomy and empowerment, is highlighted.
