EPIDEMIOLOGICAL PROFILE AND TIME TREND ANALYSIS OF ACUTE MYOCARDIAL INFARCTION IN THE STATE OF PARANÁ, BRAZIL, 2014-2024

Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) remains one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in Brazil, with significant epidemiological relevance and impact on the public health system. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to describe the epidemiological profile and analyze the temporal evolution of hospital admissions and deaths due to AMI in the state of Paraná, Brazil, from 2014 to 2024. METHODOLOGY: This is an observational, retrospective, and descriptive study with a quantitative approach, based on secondary data obtained from the Department of Informatics of the Unified Health System (DATASUS). The variables analyzed included sex, age group, race/color, hospital admissions, deaths, hospital mortality rate, and distribution by macro-regions of health. Data were organized in electronic spreadsheets and analyzed through descriptive statistics to identify patterns, inequalities, and temporal trends throughout the study period. RESULTS: A total of 89,997 hospital admissions for AMI were recorded in Paraná, predominantly among males (64.7%), white individuals (74.4%), and those aged over 50 years. The Eastern macro-region accounted for 46.3% of admissions and 42.7% of hospital deaths. The overall hospital mortality rate was 10.9%, higher among females (13.5%) and the elderly (23.5% in the ≥80 years group). CONCLUSION: The findings indicate that the epidemiological profile of AMI in Paraná is similar to the national scenario, characterized by higher occurrence among men and older adults, and a slight reduction in hospital mortality rates over time. However, regional and gender differences persist, highlighting the importance of strengthening preventive strategies, early diagnosis, and expanding access to specialized cardiovascular care.
