Socioepidemiological profile of patients with chronic kidney disease undergoing hemodialysis in Brazil, from 2013 to 2023

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a major public health challenge worldwide, with high prevalence and a significant impact on morbidity and mortality. It is characterized by progressive and irreversible loss of kidney function and is often associated with chronic conditions such as systemic hypertension and diabetes mellitus. In Brazil, the socioepidemiological profile of patients undergoing hemodialysis therapy shows a predominance in the 20-59 age group, corresponding to the economically active population. In this context, socioeconomic factors, such as the need to support a family and dependence on low incomes, can compromise adherence to treatment and continuity of care. Thus, understanding this profile is essential for planning intervention strategies aimed at improving care, optimizing therapeutic adherence, and preventing disease progression. The objective of this study is to analyze the socioepidemiological profile of patients with CKD undergoing hemodialysis in the Unified Health System (SUS) in Brazil, addressing the main etiologies, socioeconomic characteristics, geographic distribution of dialysis procedures, and prevalence according to age group and sex. The study targets patients with CKD undergoing hemodialysis treatment in Brazil. This is a quantitative study with an ecological, spatial, and time series design. Secondary data obtained from the Department of Informatics of the Unified Health System (DATASUS) and the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) were used, covering the period from 2013 to 2023. The analysis allowed for the socioepidemiological characterization of hemodialysis patients in the country, including geographic distribution and temporal trends. Between 2013 and 2023, 154,603,482 hemodialysis sessions were recorded in Brazil, evidencing high demand for care related to CKD in all age groups and regions of the country. The findings highlight CKD as a relevant public health problem, with an increase in cases and regional and socioeconomic inequalities, reinforcing the need for more equitable policies and expanded access to renal care.
