Early diagnosis of COVID-19 through imaging exams is crucial for effective disease management, allowing rapid interventions and reducing severe complications, while also aiding in controlling virus spread. Computed tomography (CT) stands out for its high sensitivity, especially in early stages, detecting subtle changes such as ground-glass opacities, consolidations, and bilateral peripheral patterns, even when laboratory tests yield false negatives. CT also enables monitoring of clinical progression and differentiation from other pulmonary diseases, further enhanced by the use of artificial intelligence for greater precision and faster interpretation. On the other hand, chest X-ray (CXR) is more accessible, faster, and lower in cost, but has lower sensitivity, particularly in early stages, limiting the detection of subtle changes. Nevertheless, CXR remains relevant for initial screenings and follow-up of moderate to severe cases, especially in resource-limited settings. Thus, the combined use of CT, CXR, and laboratory tests provides a complementary, safer, and more effective approach for the diagnosis and management of COVID-19.
