Objective: Elucidate the risk factors related to necrotizing enterocolitis in newborn. Methods: This is a integrative review with compilations of qualitative and descriptive bibliographical research, found in the National Library of Medicine, and Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences databases. The descriptors used were " enterocolitis", "risk factors", "newborn". The inclusion criteria were articles published between September 2019 and September 2024, controlled clinical trials and observational studies, in English, Portuguese and Spanish, with full text. Articles that deviated from the proposed theme and articles that were not found to be read in full were excluded. Results: The main risk factors found for enterocolitis were patent ductus arteriosus and later initiation of enteral nutrition. Furthermore, opposite conclusions were also found regarding red blood cell transfusion as a risk factor. Other hypotheses have emerged, such as treatment with caffeine, the increase in conjugated bilirubin in the 2nd week of life, and the low content of disialyl-lacto-N-tetraose in breast milk. Final considerations: The main risk factors found in this study were the persistence of the ductus arteriosus and the later initiation of enteral nutrition.
