Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the impact of systematic physical activity on the optimism levels of women after a breast cancer diagnosis. The research was developed within the context of the VIDA Project at UNIMONTES, with data collection carried out at the Exercise Laboratory (LABEX) over 12 weeks. The 38 participants were informed about the objectives and procedures, voluntarily consented, and answered the LOT-R questionnaire in a private setting before the start of their daily physical activities. The comparative analysis between regular and non-regular exercise participants revealed significant differences in several items of the instrument, indicating that regular exercise contributed to higher levels of optimism and lower scores of pessimism. The highest average optimism scores were observed among regular participants, while the highest indicators of pessimism were concentrated in the non-regular group. It is concluded that physical activity plays a relevant role in emotional well-being and can constitute an effective strategy for psychological support for women coping with breast cancer.
