Abstract

Introduction: Fungal infections represent a challenge in clinical practice, with emphasis on Candida albicans, an opportunistic pathogen in immunocompromised individuals. Despite the effectiveness of conventional antifungals, the growing resistance of fungal strains and the adverse effects associated with treatment highlight the need for effective therapeutic alternatives. Natural products such as Allium sativum and Melaleuca alternifolia have been studied due to their antimicrobial properties and potential in vitro antifungal activity. Objective: To evaluate the antifungal effectiveness of reconstituted and compounded fluconazole, alone or in combination with vegetable oils from A. sativum and M. alternifolia, against C. albicans in a controlled laboratory assay. Methods: This is an experimental, quantitative, in vitro study. Petri dishes containing Sabouraud Dextrose Agar were inoculated with C. albicans ATCC 0031. The tested compounds included compounded fluconazole (50 mg in alcohol), commercial fluconazole tablets (150 mg), garlic oil, and tea tree oil. Samples were evaluated individually and in combinations, all in triplicate. Results: The tests demonstrated that commercial fluconazole showed the strongest antifungal activity among the evaluated compounds, significantly surpassing the control and other treatments. Compounded fluconazole did not show a relevant difference compared to the control, indicating lower effectiveness. Tea tree and garlic oils also did not exhibit effective activity against C. albicans, and combinations with commercial fluconazole did not potentiate the antifungal effect. Conclusion: It is concluded that commercial fluconazole demonstrated the best antifungal activity against Candida albicans. In contrast, compounded fluconazole did not show significant effectiveness against the fungus, and likewise, the evaluated compounded preparations and vegetable oils did not produce satisfactory results.
