Abstract

Introduction: In today's society, there is a growing incidence of sleep disorders that contribute to the emergence of various pathologies, among which cardiovascular diseases are prominent. This raises the question of the relationship between sleep deprivation and cardiovascular diseases. Objective: The study aims to elucidate how sleep deprivation influences the development of cardiovascular diseases. Methodology: This is an integrative review using the PubMed database (US National Library of Medicine), with scientific data from December 22, 2018, to December 22, 2023, filtered for adults over 19 years old and without language restrictions. Discussion: Patients with short sleep duration presented more cardiovascular risk factors, being associated with a higher chance of cardiovascular events. High blood pressure and increased blood pressure are related to very short and short sleep duration, as are acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and increased coronary artery calcium (CAC). Fragmented sleep is linked to the onset of congestive heart failure. Sleep disturbance is associated with the development of subclinical arteriosclerosis, independent of other risk factors. Furthermore, older women are more susceptible to the effects of sleep disturbance. Conclusion: It is evident that sleep deprivation and non-restorative sleep culminate in the development of various cardiovascular diseases. Despite the factors that contribute to the onset of these diseases, sleep disorders are treatable and can be managed through a set of actions that help balance sleep and thereby improve an individual's quality of life.
