Abstract

Introduction: Medical emergencies such as cardiopulmonary arrest (CPA), foreign body airway obstruction (FBAO), and seizure episodes are significant causes of morbidity and mortality in Brazil. Although these conditions are critical, timely and appropriate interventions can be life-saving. However, a large portion of the population lacks the necessary training to respond effectively, highlighting the importance of health education initiatives aimed at empowering the general public. Objective: To train the administrative staff of a higher education institution in the operation of emergency medical services and in the early recognition, appropriate response, and initial management of urgent situations—specifically CPA, FBAO, and seizures. Methodology: The intervention was carried out in three stages. The first involved theoretical and practical training in CPR and the use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) through simulations. The second stage demonstrated airway clearance techniques across different age groups. The third focused on seizure management, emphasizing protective measures, post-seizure care, and debunking harmful practices. Pre- and post-intervention questionnaires were used to assess knowledge acquisition, and educational materials and hands-on resources supported the training. Results: Participation among staff was limited, likely due to structural barriers and lack of institutional support. Nonetheless, those who attended showed strong engagement and a marked improvement in performance, with average correct responses rising from 70% to 87%. The greatest challenges were observed in CPR and airway obstruction techniques, suggesting the need for more practical reinforcement and the integration of educational technologies. Conclusion: Overall, the training sessions proved effective in enhancing safety, preparedness, and the dissemination of first aid knowledge within the institutional setting. Additionally, the initiative fostered communication skills among students and strengthened their theoretical and practical understanding of emergency care.
