Abstract

The study analyzed the temporal, regional, and gender evolution of hospitalizations for schizophrenia, schizotypal and delusional disorders in Brazil between 2015 and 2024. This is an ecological and descriptive study, based on data from the SUS Hospital Information System (SIH/DATASUS) and population estimates from IBGE. Hospitalization rates were calculated per 10,000 inhabitants, and regional differences were assessed using the Kruskal-Wallis and Tukey tests, with a significance level of p < 0.05.

The results revealed important regional inequalities: the South Region had the highest average hospitalization rates (M = 4.80), significantly higher than the others, while the North Region recorded the lowest values (M = 2.39). A significant increase in rates was observed in the North and South after 2021, possibly reflecting the resumption of services after the COVID-19 pandemic. Overall, the national rate maintained a trend of stability throughout the period.

Regarding gender, there was a male predominance in all regions and years analyzed, with a rate ratio (RR) between 1.5 and 1.7, indicating greater vulnerability of men to hospitalizations for psychotic disorders.

The study highlights regional and gender inequalities in the occurrence of psychiatric hospitalizations in the country, pointing to the need to strengthen the Psychosocial Care Network and strategies aimed at preventing relapses and promoting therapeutic adherence, especially among men and in regions with the highest growth rates.
