Introduction: Cheiloscopy, a branch of forensic dentistry that studies lip prints, has gained prominence as a complementary method for human identification due to the uniqueness and long-term stability of lip patterns. However, biological factors such as age and gender may influence these patterns, resulting in variations that require deeper investigation. Objective: This study aimed to analyze, through an integrative literature review, the influence of age and gender on lip characteristics and their implications for the forensic applicability of cheiloscopy. Methodology: The search was conducted in the Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences (LILACS), and National Library of Medicine (PubMed) databases. The descriptors “Cheiloscopy,” “Lip characteristics,” and “Forensic Dentistry” were used in Portuguese and English. Scientific articles and literature reviews published between 2015 and 2024 addressing the relationship between age, gender, and lip patterns were included. From 41 studies initially retrieved, 15 met the inclusion criteria and were qualitatively analyzed. Conclusion: The literature indicates that although lip patterns are unique and permanent, variations related to age and gender may occur, especially in the central and lateral regions of the lips. Nevertheless, these differences do not compromise the reliability of cheiloscopy as an auxiliary method for human identification, reinforcing its relevance in forensic contexts. Future studies with larger samples and standardized methodologies may enhance its applicability and forensic accuracy.
