Dental caries is one of the most prevalent chronic diseases worldwide, and early detection is essential to avoid invasive interventions. Interproximal radiography stands out as an important diagnostic tool, particularly in early lesions and regions with limited visual access. To analyze the importance of interproximal radiography in the early diagnosis of caries, highlighting its contribution to clinical practice.
This is a literature review based on original studies retrieved from the PubMed database, without language or time restrictions, selected between June and September 2025. Articles addressing the use of interproximal radiography for caries detection were included.
The reviewed studies show that interproximal radiography provides high accuracy in detecting proximal lesions, especially when combined with visual clinical examination. Bitewing radiography is considered the gold standard for diagnosing demineralized lesions, while digital radiography offers advantages such as reduced radiation exposure and the ability to adjust image contrast and density. Proper interpretation of radiographs is highlighted as a key factor for diagnostic accuracy.
Interproximal radiography is an indispensable resource in contemporary dentistry, enabling earlier and more conservative diagnoses. When combined with other diagnostic methods, it increases accuracy, supports dental structure preservation, and allows less invasive treatments.
