Abstract

Femur fractures result from high- or low-energy trauma and pose a public health challenge. This study aims to analyze hospital admissions for femur fractures in women in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, between 2014 and 2025, as well as describe their distribution by age group and year of occurrence. This is a cross-sectional, retrospective, quantitative, and descriptive study, analyzing data collected from the Hospital Information System (SIH/SUS) of the Department of Information Technology of the Unified Health System (DATASUS). The variables analyzed were age by age group (20 to 29 years, 30 to 39 years, 40 to 49 years, 50 to 59 years, 60 to 69 years, 70 to 79 years, 80 years and older) and year of admission (2014 to 2025). It was found that, between 2014 and 2025, 45,469 female hospitalizations for femur fractures were recorded in Rio Grande do Sul. Most occurred in elderly women, especially those aged 80 and over (47.21%), followed by those aged 70 to 79 (28.30%) and 60 to 69 (12.78%). In the 20 to 59 age group, the numbers remained low and relatively stable. A progressive increase in hospitalizations was observed until 2024, mainly among the oldest women, reaching a peak in that year. In 2025, there was a decrease in all age groups, likely due to the partiality of the data (January to August). It is concluded that femur fractures represent a significant public health problem, with a significant impact on elderly women, requiring specific prevention and care strategies.
