INCIDENCE OF WHOOPING COUGH CASES LINKED TO VACCINE COVERAGE IN THE MACROREGIONAL HEALTH CARE CITIES OF THE STATE OF PARANÁ

Abstract

objective: To identify the health macro-regions in the state of Paraná with the highest incidence of confirmed cases of pertussis in children under 10 years of age, compared with the vaccination coverage rate in the years 2023 to 2024. Material and Method - This is an analytical observational epidemiological study of the ecological type, carried out from public secondary data obtained by the Notifiable Disease Information System (SINAN) of the SUS Information Technology Department (DataSUS) and data contained on the website of the Ministry of Health Vaccination Coverage - Residency, available through the National Network of Health Data (RNDS). Results and discussion - In the year 2023 (Jan. to Dec.) there was vaccination coverage of 90,81% and 86,77% in 2024 (Jan. and Sept.), with the pentavalent vaccine, with 8 and 124 cases confirmed, respectively. The DTP vaccine, ist booster in 2023 (Jan. to Dec.) reached vaccination coverage of 84,00%, and in 2024 (Jan. to Sept.), 83,00%, with 2 and 84 cases, respectively. The DTP vaccine in 2023 (Jan. to Dec.) had 90,86% vaccination coverage, and in 2024 (Jan. and Dec.) 86,83%, no cases were recorded in 2023 in the age group from 4 to 9 years old and 2024 totaling 67 cases. Given the results, it is considered that the increase in pertussis may be related to a decrease in vaccination coverage. Conclusion: It is expected that by the end of 2024, vaccination coverage will exceed 2023 rates, considering the increase in pertussis cases. The drop in vaccination coverage highlights gaps that need to be addressed.
