Abstract

Neonatal palliative care aims to provide comfort, relieve pain, and improve the quality of life of newborns with serious illnesses or life-limiting conditions, while also offering support to their families. Nursing plays a fundamental role in this approach, adopting a holistic and family-centered perspective. Nurses’ responsibilities include pain management, emotional support, education, communication, care coordination, and spiritual and cultural assistance. This study, based on an integrative literature review from databases such as PubMed, SciELO, and Google Scholar, aims to explore the importance of the nurse in neonatal palliative care. It highlights the relevance of improving quality of life, the development of health policies and clinical protocols, as well as the social, familial, and scientific impact. By addressing a sensitive and essential topic, this research may significantly contribute to clinical practice and the quality of life of the families involved. Expanding knowledge in neonatology becomes essential when integrating palliative care for newborns with terminal or life-limiting conditions. This area requires a detailed understanding of neonatal physiological and psychological development, as well as the emotional and physical needs of each patient, since these variables directly influence the approach and outcomes of the palliative care provided.
