NURSING STUDENTS' CONCEPTS ABOUT THE CARE PROVIDED TO CANCER PATIENTS

Cancer is a complex of diverse pathologies triggered by the proliferation and uncontrolled growth of cells, which develops in tissues and organs. This study aimed to evaluate nursing graduates' perceptions of the care provided to cancer patients. This is an exploratory, descriptive, qualitative study conducted at a higher education institution in the city of Juazeiro do Norte, Ceará state. Participants were final-year undergraduate nursing students. A semi-structured questionnaire was used as data collection instrument; it was administered in May 2024. Data analysis used the Bardin method, which complied with the ethical and legal principles established by Resolution 510/16 of the National Health Council. The study concluded that nursing students recognize the importance of nurses in oncology and understand the roles and challenges they face as members of the healthcare team when dealing with people with cancer. They acknowledge some weaknesses in scientific knowledge and mental preparation for working in services that provide care to people with cancer. The graduates also emphasized the extreme importance of academic preparation within the curriculum, given that malignant neoplasms are increasingly prevalent in the global population. However, the survey revealed that most of the students who participated in the study are not interested in specializing in oncology.
