ULCERATIVE COLITIS: A NARRATIVE REVIEW OF CLINICAL, THERAPEUTIC ASPECTS AND QUALITY OF LIFE

Introduction: Ulcerative Colitis (UC) is a chronic Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) characterized by inflammation of the rectal and colonic mucosa, which can extend throughout the large intestine. This condition presents a variety of symptoms, such as abdominal pain, bloody diarrhea, urgency to defecate, weight loss, and fatigue. Beyond the physical impacts, UC also significantly affects patients’ psychological and psychosocial well‑being, negatively influencing their quality of life. The discomfort produced by symptoms, the unpredictability of flare‑ups, and the social stigma attached to the disease may trigger anxiety, depression, social isolation, and interpersonal difficulties. Consequently, early diagnosis, continuous follow‑up, and appropriate treatment are essential to minimize the disease’s detrimental effects. Objective: This study aims, through a literature review, to analyze the principal clinical and therapeutic aspects of Ulcerative Colitis and to understand how the disease affects the quality of life of those affected. It also seeks to emphasize the importance of integrative and multidimensional approaches that consider the individual’s physical, emotional, and social well‑being, providing a broader and more compassionate perspective on care. Methodology: The methodology employed was a literature review based on scientific articles and clinical studies addressing UC from clinical, therapeutic, and psychosocial perspectives. National and international publications were selected, prioritizing those with scientific relevance that comprehensively explored the relationship between disease symptoms and the impairment of patients’ quality of life. Final considerations: It is concluded that early diagnosis, combined with effective treatments addressing both physical and psychological aspects, is crucial for improving the quality of life of patients with UC. Moreover, the importance of raising awareness about the disease and implementing humanized, multidisciplinary care that fosters inclusion, empathy, continuous support, and the valuing of holistic health in individuals living with this condition is underscored.
