Abstract

The high rate of mental disorders, conceptualized as syndromes characterized by clinically significant disturbances, distributed throughout world society is of great notoriety. Relating this reality to Dentistry, it is essential to mention the impacts promoted by these symptoms on the patient's oral health and their implications. In this sense, this work aims to discuss the main dental challenges, which present themselves as barriers in the process of effectively maintaining the oral health of patients affected by mental disorders, considering the prevalence of the main oral problems in this group of patients, through of an integrative literature review. To this end, the databases PubMed, Regional Health Portal and ScienceDirect were used through a cross search of the keywords "Mental Disorders", "Dentistry" and "Access to Health Services" using the Boolean character "AND" . With the development of a careful and precise analysis, numerous evidences indicated that individuals with mental disorders tend to have worse oral health than individuals without these mental conditions, resulting from various circumstances, such as the lack of self-care, inadequacy and inaccessibility of dental services, clinical implications and pharmacological therapies. In this sense, mental disorders are, in fact, a factor that modifies the quality of life related to oral health.
