EFFECTS OF CHRONIC STRESS ON PHYSICAL AND MENTAL HEALTH: MULTIPROFESSIONAL INTERVENTION STRATEGIES

The concept of chronic stress is defined as a continuous response of the organism to prolonged exposure to stressful stimuli different from acute stress, which involves transient releases of catecholamines and cortisol. Considering the relevance and importance of the topic, this study aims to analyze and describe the intervention strategies, such as treatment and control, of the interdisciplinary team. This is a narrative literature review research. The bibliographic survey was carried out in electronic databases considered of great relevance by the scientific community for the areas of health sciences, such as PubMed, Scielo, LILACS and BVS, between 2019-2025 in English and Portuguese. After critical analysis of the selected studies, the association between prolonged exposure to chronic stress and a wide diversity of implications for physical and mental health was revealed. Such as damage to the cardiovascular, metabolic, neuroendocrine and immune systems, with repercussions that may favor the worsening or emergence of type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, Systemic Arterial Hypertension, dermatological diseases, such as psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, acne and alopecia. As intervention strategies of the multidisciplinary team, the review found the encouragement of physical activities, cognitive-behavioral therapy, nutritional education and prevention campaigns as consolidated strategies, in addition to others, such as relaxation and mindfulness techniques. The great importance of multidisciplinary intervention strategies becomes increasingly relevant, since isolated strategies are insufficient to address all dimensions of stress, since it is a multifactorial disease. Several gaps were observed during the research, whose results were presented in a way that recommends the development of new research in different contexts, expanding its impact and promoting interdisciplinary and effective integrative practices in coping with chronic stress.
