Abstract

Endometriosis is a gynecological disease characterized by theexistence of ectopic endometrial tissue that causes differentsymptoms such as dysmenorrhea, chronic pelvic pain, dyspareunia, infertility, and cyclical bowel and urinarycomplaints. In Brazil, it is estimated that around seven millionBrazilian women suffer from endometriosis. Although most ofthe initial symptoms appear during adolescence, the definitivediagnosis often occurs late, in more advanced stages of thedisease. Brazil recorded 137,002 cases of endometriosis in theperiod under study. The highest prevalence was in thesoutheast region with 58,403 hospitalizations, followed by thenortheast region with 35,383 diagnoses. The last two years(2023/2024) had the highest number of hospitalizations for endometriosis since 2014, with 2023 recording 15,961 occurrences and 2024, 16,014 cases. This study aims toanalyze the prevalence of endometriosis in Brazilianadolescents from 2014 to 2024. An ecological, quantitative, and retrospective study was conducted by collecting data fromthe SIH/SUS (SUS Hospital Information System), linked toDATASUS, regarding the prevalence of endometriosis in Brazilian adolescents from January 2014 to November 2024. An increase in the number of cases of endometriosis wasobserved in the last two years in Brazil, with the highest peakof hospitalizations of the decade being recorded in 2024. The current epidemiological scenario shows the importance ofpublic health campaigns that raise awareness among thepopulation about the need for early diagnosis and treatment. A high number of hospitalizations of adolescents withendometriosis has also been observed in the country, reinforcing the importance of regular gynecologicalmonitoring from the beginning of the childbearing age.
