Abstract

In Brazil, the incidence and prevalence of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), as well as the frequency of its risk factors, have been progressively increasing. It is estimated that approximately 90% of patients with kidney disease present associated oral alterations, resulting from the systemic condition itself, the effects of adopted therapies, or both. It is noteworthy that dental care for these individuals requires specific precautions, especially during surgical procedures, which may be more complex due to impaired renal function. This study aimed to evaluate the level of knowledge of dentists regarding outpatient surgical care for patients with CKD, identifying, from the data obtained, the main gaps related to the topic. This is a field study, descriptive in nature, with a qualitative-quantitative approach, conducted through the application of a structured questionnaire. The investigated population consisted of dentists who perform outpatient surgical procedures in public health services in the municipalities of Natal and Parnamirim, in the state of Rio Grande do Norte (RN), Brazil. The results reveal significant gaps in the clinical knowledge of professionals, especially concerning surgical and therapeutic management in the context of kidney disease. These findings highlight the need for broader dissemination of updated scientific recommendations and the development of clinical protocols to ensure safe and effective dental care for this population.
