Abstract

Introduction: Epithelial carcinoma of the tongue is a malignant neoplasm that affects the oral mucosa and is more common in men over 50 years of age. This tumor can cause pain, speech and swallowing difficulties, and significantly affect the quality of life of patients. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment are essential for a better prognosis. Objective: To report a case of epithelial carcinoma on the dorsum of the tongue, highlighting its clinical evolution, therapeutic approach and outcome, in addition to emphasizing the importance of early diagnosis and multidisciplinary follow-up in the management of the disease. Case Report: A 54-year-old female patient with a history of smoking and alcoholism for over 40 years presented with an ulcerated lesion on the dorsum of the tongue that had been growing progressively for six months, measuring approximately 2 centimeters. Clinical evaluation revealed an irregular, hardened mass that was painful to palpation. An incisional biopsy was performed, which confirmed the diagnostic hypothesis of squamous cell carcinoma. Imaging tests did not show distant metastases. Results: Given the diagnosis, the patient was referred to a head and neck surgeon to determine the best therapeutic strategy. Conclusion: Epithelial carcinoma on the dorsum of the tongue requires early diagnosis to ensure better clinical outcomes. Rapid identification of the disease allows the implementation of more effective therapeutic strategies, reducing complications and increasing patient survival. This case reinforces the importance of prevention, continuous follow-up, and a multidisciplinary approach in the treatment of this neoplasm.
