NURSING CARE FOR INDIGENOUS MEN’S HEALTH IN THE LIGHT OF TRANSCULTURAL THEORY.

Abstract

Introduction: The health of indigenous men in Brazil is a topic that involves a series of challenges, especially in relation to access and quality of health services offered to this population, since they live in different contexts. The social construction of men as being resilient and strong, the lack of information and the resistance of men to seek health institutions for preventive measures directly reflect on the quality of life and health prognosis of these men. Madeleine Leininger's Transcultural Theory applied to nursing care proposes culturally holistic care, based on the appreciation and respect for the knowledge, practices and meanings attributed to health and disease by different cultural groups. Objectives: To analyze, through the scientific literature, how nursing care for the health of indigenous men has been approached in light of Madeleine Leininger's Transcultural Theory. Methodology: This is an integrative literature review, composed of six stages. Results: It was evidenced that nursing care for indigenous men still faces important challenges, especially with regard to respect for cultural particularities and traditional health practices, where the Theory of Transcultural Care, proposed by Madeleine Leininger, emerges as a theoretical framework guiding nursing practice in indigenous territories, going beyond traditional clinical practices, requiring sensitivity, active listening and knowledge of the cultural, social and territorial specificities of these communities, making nursing in this context a bridge between traditional knowledge and the official health system. Conclusion: It is urgent to invest in the training of nursing professionals with cultural competences, as well as in the development of public policies that guarantee respect for diversity and the inclusion of traditional knowledge in health services, promoting equity, acceptance and improvement of the health conditions of indigenous men in Brazil.
