Abstract

Introduction: Hepatic hernia (HH) is a rare protrusion of the liver through the diaphragm or abdominal wall, more common in neonates and frequently resulting from previous surgeries. Its diagnosis is complicated and conducted via CT and MRI scans. Objective: To review the clinical and surgical approaches to HH, analyzing variations in clinical presentation, diagnostic techniques, and treatments. Methodology: A systematic review was conducted in PubMed and Scopus following PRISMA guidelines, including articles in English and Spanish from 2020-2024. Results: Common symptoms include abdominal pain, dyspnea, and rarely, a palpable mass. Although some cases may be asymptomatic, advanced diagnostic techniques such as CT and MRI are essential for accurate diagnosis. Laparoscopic surgery is noted for its effectiveness in recovery and reducing complications, although open repairs are necessary in cases of larger defects. Conclusion: Treatment varies from conservative management to surgical interventions, with a focus on laparoscopy due to its postoperative benefits, although open repairs are considered for complex hernias. Treatment planning should be individualized to optimize outcomes.
