Abstract
Abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB) is a common complaint in medical offices and represents a factor that harms women's health in all its aspects (physical, social and emotional). Therefore, the objective of this study was to write a narrative review of the literature on the main causes of AUB. Since AUB is not a disease, but rather a component of symptoms, the resolution of the clinical picture often depends on the identification of the underlying problem. In this context, FIGO created the acronym PALM-COEIN, which aims to group, in a didactic and simple way, the main etiologies of AUB into two groups: structural causes, represented by uterine polyps, adenomyosis, leiomyoma and malignancy, and non-structural causes, composed of coagulopathies, ovulatory dysfunction, endometrial, iatrogenic and other unclassified causes. Knowledge and investigation of these etiologies should be the responsibility of health professionals, since the correct management of these patients is associated with a positive impact on their quality of life.
