Abstract

Introduction: Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is a degenerative disease that affects the quality of life due to chronic pain and functional decline. Genicular nerve block (GNB), a minimally invasive ultrasound-guided technique, has been proposed as an alternative to alleviate associated pain while avoiding the risks of surgical options like arthroplasty. Objective: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of GNB in the treatment of chronic knee pain, analyzing its potential in a multimodal approach. Methodology: Following the PRISMA model, a search of articles was conducted in PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Cochrane Library, limiting to studies in English and Spanish published between 2020 and 2024. Results: GNB demonstrated efficacy in reducing pain and improving function in the short, medium, and long term, with favorable comparisons towards the combination of lidocaine and triamcinolone. Safety was supported by a low incidence of significant adverse effects. Conclusion: Ultrasound-guided GNB is effective and safe, showing sustained benefits in pain reduction and functional improvement. Its incorporation in multimodal treatments of KOA presents a promising alternative to traditional therapies.
