Abstract

Introduction: Antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a strategy that involves the chemical interaction of a topical non-toxic photosensitizer, a light source with a specific wavelength and in a non-invasive way. The photosensitizer releases the light that reacts with the molecular oxygen in the environment to generate highly reactive oxygen species, which will cause the cell wall to rupture and consequently the cell to die. The work aimed to carry out a literature review about the effectiveness of using PDT associated with chemical-mechanical preparation for better disinfection of root canals. Methods: This review was conducted through a comprehensive research on the effectiveness of photodynamic therapy in disinfecting root canals, using the Pubmed database, with the keywords Photodynamic Therapy in Endodontic and Covid, and 148 results were found and resulted in in 30 articles when the inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied. Conclusion: We can conclude that the use of PDT is effective in disinfecting root canals after PQM. This increases the antimicrobial power of endodontic treatment over areas not reached by chemical and mechanical action. And currently in Covid-19 times, it makes interesting to use PDT to decrease the number of sessions.
