The Connection Between Obesity and Pre-Eclampsia: Associated Risks and Identification of Biomarkers

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to review the current literature on the impact of obesity as a significant risk factor for pre-eclampsia and explore potential biomarkers that may assist in predicting the onset and progression of this condition. This is a critical and analytical narrative review. A review of articles was conducted in the Scientific Electronic Library Online and PubMed databases. Obesity has been increasing globally, with a growing prevalence, especially among women of reproductive age. In parallel, obesity during pregnancy has been associated with several complications, including pre-eclampsia, which affects 2% to 8% of pregnant women. The risk of developing this condition is significantly higher in obese women, with an increase of up to four times compared to those with normal weight. Obesity contributes to metabolic dysregulation, chronic inflammation, and hormonal dysfunction, factors that exacerbate the risk of pre-eclampsia. Biomarkers such as leptin, adiponectin, and C-reactive protein have been identified as potential predictors of the condition, but further research is needed to validate their clinical application.
