Objectives: To evaluate the effectiveness of nanoparticles in decontaminating and maintaining the mechanical properties of the remaining teeth. Methodology: This is a literature review that was carried out between January 2025 and February 2025, the question that guided the search was “Does the use of nanoparticles increase the effectiveness of decontaminating root canals and preserving the mechanical properties of the remainder?”. From this, a search was carried out in the PubMed (U.S. National Library of Medicine) and VHL (Virtual Health Library) databases, with a time span of 5 years. The search strategy was formulated by combining the descriptors indexed in DeCS/MeSH “Nanoparticles”, “Nanotechnology” and “Root Canal Irrigants”, combined with the Boolean operator “AND”. The selection criteria were: studies published in the last 5 years, which were related to the guiding question, with full text available in Portuguese, English and Spanish, systematic literature reviews, meta-analyses and randomized clinical trials. The initial search resulted in the identification of 11 articles. Of these, 6 articles were included in the search. Conclusion: Nanoparticles showed potential in endodontics, with antimicrobial action and preservation of dentin. Those with silver and zinc oxide combatted multispecies biofilms, while those with calcium hydroxide improved drug release. More clinical studies are needed to validate its efficacy and safety.
