The influence of Vitamin D on Osseointegration in Dental Implants

Osseointegration is an essential factor for the success of two dental implants, guaranteeing direct bone formation at the structural and functional level. Various factors influence this process, including surgical technique, type of prosthesis, biomaterials and systemic conditions of the patient. Vitamin D plays a fundamental role in the maintenance of bone metabolism, favoring osteoblastic activity and calcium absorption, essential factors for osseointegration. This study carried out a bibliographic review to analyze the relationship between serum levels of vitamin D and the success of dental implants. The research was conducted in the PubMed and LILACS databases, using specific descriptors and rigorous inclusion and exclusion criteria, resulting in a selection of 19 relevant articles published between 2020 and 2025. The results show that vitamin D deficiency is associated with a higher incidence of implant failures, negatively impacting to initial stability and bone regeneration. Studies demonstrate that patients with insufficient levels of vitamin D (<20 ng/mL) present higher rates of early implant failure. On the other hand, vitamin D supplementation has been shown to be beneficial, promoting more effective osseointegration and reducing complications, especially in patients with comorbidities such as diabetes and osteoporosis. Since the benefits of vitamin D supplementation are widely recognized, the literature still lacks standardized protocols regarding the ideal dosage and timing of supplementation. However, pre-operative triage of serum levels of vitamin D must be incorporated into clinical practice to optimize the results of dental implants and minimize failures. Future studies are necessary to define more robust clinical guidelines on the role of vitamin D in implantodontics.
