Abstract

DBS has evolved from a treatment for movement disorders, such as Parkinson’s disease, into a potential therapy for neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer’s. Technological advances, such as directional electrodes and stimulation algorithms, have improved precision and reduced adverse effects. Systematic reviews and clinical trials suggest that DBS can modulate brain circuits involved in cognition and memory, but the lack of standardization in stimulation parameters limits its applicability. While studies indicate potential benefits in stabilizing cognitive function, ethical and security challenges, such as digital vulnerabilities, still need to be addressed. Ongoing research is essential to establish DBS as a safe and effective treatment for dementia.
