Abstract

Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic posed unprecedented challenges to healthcare professionals, exposing them to physical and emotional burdens that contributed to an increased prevalence of Burnout Syndrome. Methods: This study, through a narrative literature review, analyzed data published between 2020 and 2024 regarding the prevalence, associated factors, and impacts of Burnout among healthcare professionals in the post-pandemic context. Databases such as PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science were consulted using descriptors like "Burnout Syndrome," "healthcare professionals," "COVID-19," "mental health," and "occupational stress." Results: The findings revealed alarming Burnout prevalence rates, ranging from 42% to 61%, with frontline workers exhibiting the highest levels. Factors such as work overload (85%), anxiety and depression (70%), fear of contagion (65%), and grief (60%) emerged as significant determinants. Specific groups, such as women and young professionals, were found to be particularly vulnerable. Moreover, Burnout was associated with reduced empathy, increased medical errors, and intentions to leave the profession, compromising care quality and the sustainability of healthcare systems. Institutional and individual strategies, including psychological support programs, workload reduction, and improved working conditions, showed potential for mitigating Burnout. However, gaps remain regarding the long-term effects of the syndrome and the efficacy of interventions in various contexts. Conclusion: It is concluded that Burnout Syndrome should be addressed as a global priority, with the implementation of occupational health policies and integrated strategies to promote professionals' well-being and strengthen healthcare systems. Future research is essential to deepen understanding of the issue and develop more effective approaches to address this challenge.
